Three of their albums, New Kids On The Block (1986), Hangin’ Tough (1988), and Step By Step (1990) were certified a cumulative 14-times platinum in the U.S. alone, with total worldwide sales of all their albums topping 70 million. New Kids’ litany of hit singles, well-chosen album tracks, rarities, and solo recordings is at the core of a brand-new GREATEST HITS collection that com¬mem¬o¬rates their reunion this year. Remastered for the first time in a decade, with new liner notes written by Rolling Stone contributing editor David Wild – and Jason Nevins’ climactic closing track, “2008 New Kids On The Block Mega Mix” – GREATEST HITS will arrive in stores August 12th on Columbia/Legacy, a division of SONY BMG MUSIC ENTERTAIN¬MENT. “Even in their original days of world domination,” writes Wild (who covered the group on tour for Rolling Stone back in the day), “the Kids were cooler and more interesting than even their millions of squealing fans imagined. Five teens made it through the citywide auditions – Jon Knight (age 15 at the time), his brother Jordan (14), Donnie Wahlberg (15), and Danny Wood (15) – joined by precocious Joey McIntyre (11 at the time). B, it was their time. C, we weren’t even in a band anymore. I was doing other things … McIntyre: It sounds like a comedy skit where we’re furious over it! Wahlberg: Yeah, like “Damn it! Why are they being so successful?” McIntyre:better sleep “We’ve got to find a way to ruin it!” Wahlberg: When we came out, there was MTV, and that was it. And there wasn’t room for another band like us. … And when we went away, the music business changed. Wahlberg: I think it’s easy to criticize things that you maybe don’t quite know the story on. But the reality is, we’re in the music business. John Mayer might be able to play the guitar better than any of us … but we all signed record contracts. We’ve all made a decision to make our career in this business. So to scoff at people because they do something different or don’t do what you would do is silly. Fortunately, we haven’t really found that this time around. I think people have come to understand that maybe we’re a little bit different … a little bit more of a grass-roots band than people ever gave us credit for. We weren’t picked out of thousands of people. It was a very real story, how we came together. CNN: Which one of you has changed the most? Knight: I don’t think any of us have really changed. We’ve matured; we’ve mellowed a bit. We have more wisdom, but personality-wise, we’re all the same and it’s good to see. And that’s what made us in the past, and that’s what makes us now. Danny Wood: I think the change you would see (is when) each of us (is) individually at home with our kids and our family lives. But when we get together, it’s all still the same. Wahlberg: Jon has a British accent now. Danny won’t take commercial airliners anymore. Jordan only greets fans with gloves. (They all laugh.) It’s a joke! New Kids on the Block is an American boy band that enjoyed success in the late 1980s and early 1990s and went on to sell 80 million records worldwide. Assembled in Boston in 1984 by producer Maurice Starr, the members consist of brothers Jordan and Jonathan Knight, Joey McIntyre, Donnie Wahlberg, and Danny Wood. They won two American Music Awards in 1990 for Favorite Pop/Rock Band, Duo, or Group and Favorite Pop/Rock Album. After breaking ties with them, Starr and his business partner, Mary Alford, sought to create a white counterpart act. Auditions were held around Boston, at which some five hundred teenaged boys auditioned. Among them was 15-year-old Donnie Wahlberg, who immediately impressed Starr and Alford with his rapping skills, dancing ability and showmanship, becoming the group’s first member. Wahlberg assisted in helping to recruit other members. Among them were his younger brother Mark, and his best friend Danny Wood. He also coaxed one-time schoolmate Jordan Knight, who sang an exceptional falsetto, into auditioning for Starr as well. Upon Knight’s passing the audition, his older brother Jonathan (also possessing a strong singing voice) was accepted into the group as well. As the group began to take shape, Mark became disillusioned with its bubble gum direction, and opted to quit. Another one of Donnie’s neighborhood friends, Jaime Kelley, took his place. Kelley, though, would eventually be dismissed for lack of concentration and discipline. Seeking a Michael Jackson-esque singer to sing the high solos, Starr replaced him with 12-year-old Joey McIntyre—whom the other guys initially resented for being the one to replace their friend. With the final line-up in place Starr rehearsed the boys diligently, after school and on weekends, and eventually secured the group (which was being called Nynuk) a recording contract at Columbia Records. The label, however, demanded Starr change the name of the group. Subsequently they settled on New Kids on the Block, after a rap song that Donnie had written and arranged for their first album. In April 1986, Columbia Records released the group’s self-titled debut album. The album, almost exclusively written and produced by Maurice Starr, featured mid 80s bubblegum pop material. The first single, “Be My Girl” received minor airplay around the group’s native Boston, but failed to capture nationwide attention.
